Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Or do you feel stressed at moments you shouldn’t be stressed at all?
You need mindfulness. More specifically, meditation.
In this article, I’ll give you a short guide (for beginners) to meditate and become more mindful in your life and 5 reasons why you should.
Don’t waste any more time and let’s get started.
1 — Become One With Yourself & The World
It’s 2023.
And one year ago I would have said we were more disconnected from the earth and ourselves than ever.
Maybe, a little shift is happening.
Thankfully, covid did something good for us. Realize how important our immune system and bodily confidence are.
Lots of people start doing several things to work on their health:
- Working out.
- Watch their food.
- Meditation.
- Cold showers.
- Breathwork.
These things make you feel much better if applied well enough. That’s why so many people started doing them in the past 2–3 years and I’m hoping this trend continues.
I started a meditation practice in the middle of the pandemic. Had tried it once when I was younger and didn’t like it. Got distracted easily and just thought it was BS.
Once you get older you need to find an inner piece (whatever that means).
2 — Removing Stress & Anxiety From Your Life
I’m autistic. Difficult enough already.
Life isn’t easy for many of us. We’ve got jobs, school, expectations, and much more that keep us on the societal treadmill.
That’s causing stress and anxiety.
We should all be more mindful. It would take away a big chunk of our problems including stress. One way to do that is through meditation.
By breathing and focussing on ‘The nothing’.
You can flow on the stream of calmness that your brain produces while you meditate. You’ll experience it as your heartbeat drops very slowly — a lower heartbeat means less stress.
Or, if you do experience stress, it’s at a lower level and you’ll be able to think rationally about it.
Bonus tip: enhance meditation effects by taking cold showers and reduce stress levels even more.
3 — Meditation Improves Sleep Quality & You’ll Fall Asleep Much Faster
I have tremendous trouble falling asleep.
Once I sleep it’s all fine, it just takes a lot of time before I get there. Sometimes even hours.
But there’s a little trick I use to fall asleep faster: meditation.
As I explained in the previous paragraph meditation helps you to reduce your heart rate and that’s exactly what you need when you want to fall asleep.
It makes you calmer and flow on your own mind’s stream of no thoughts.
Our mind is a Forward-only machine and therefore it can not prevent you from thinking about anything you want to block from your mind. The only thing you can do is focus on other things.
Things like breathing.
It will make your mind focus on breathing and nothing more.
4 — Taking Care of Your Emotional Well-being
Once I was in a fight with my girlfriend. All terrible, but I had to calm myself down. I did it through meditation and every after that was just pure Zen.
By applying a correct meditation technique (for the short term) you get better at controlling your emotions.
Just when you want to fall asleep. I tried to slow my heartbeat. That removes the frustration and anger as well. Try it before saying something you’ll regret.
Lots of people should try this.
Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray“I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.”
5 — Entering a More Spiritual Version of Yourself
Meditation isn’t just physical or mental. It could also be spiritual.
There’s something called spiritual meditation. According to an article by HealthLine, it’s used by people to connect themselves to something different than in this world or themselves.
It’s very popular in Asia.
That’s because of:
- Cultural heritage.
- Search for meaning and purpose.
- Social cohesion.
- Health and well-being.
One of the very big differences with regular meditation is that when you’re practicing spiritual meditation you’re visualizing the air you breathe or another relaxing image.
I do this a lot.
I’ll sit on the bed and close my eyes. Visualize my breathing and focus on that stream.
It’s very relaxing.
