7 Places To Visit When You’re Going on an Alps Roadtrip

Change of plans, my sister and I are not visiting Scotland this May. Instead, we plan on going on an Alps road trip by train using the Interrail Pass.

So now we’re wondering where we should go. In this article, I’ll discover the most beautiful places in the Alps and share them with you. So we both know where to go when we visit the Alps.

1. The Matterhorn/Zermatt

Often seen as one of the most beautiful places and mountains in Europe. It’s a big mountain. The 7th highest mountain in the area.

Therefore it is the most photographed mountain on the planet.

The village is situated on the border between Switzerland and Italy, above Zermatt in Switzerland and Breuil-Cervinia in Italy, and is a popular tourist destination.

2. Lake Como and Como

We will visit Como Lake and Como in our little vacation — I’ve never been to the town but we drove by when we went to Orbetello in 2017.

Now it’s time to visit this beautiful town of lakes.

The Lake is in the Italian region of Lombardy which is a beautiful area in Italy. It is near some pretty high mountains.

Visit it as soon as you can.

3. The Fairytale City of Hallstatt

Have you seen Frozen? Arendelle is based on Hallstatt — magnificent isn’t it?

As you can see it’s surrounded by mountains and lakes making it one of the most beautiful places in the whole Alps. You can go there by train and that route is amazing.

4. Lugano, Swiss Alps

Near to Como and the Como Lake is Lugano. It looks a little like Como but this is in Switzerland but it feels much like Italy — they also speak Italian there.

The beautiful blue lakes and green mountains might put a spell on you — I bet you’d never want to leave again.

Swimming in lakes like these must feel magical.

5. Chur — The Oldest Place in Switzerland

In the east of Switzerland, you find the oldest place in Switzerland — it is said that Chur was already inhabited 9000 years B.C. by farmers in the area.

The city center is very old and has a rich history of culture. There are around 30.000 inhabitants and is loved by tourists.

6. Pilatus, Luzern

The Pilatus is a high mountain in the North of Switzerland. It’s very known in the Luzern area, so if you’re around, give it a go.

7. Innsbruck

Innsbruck is a beautiful Austrian city in the Alps. It’s located in the southwest of Austria and is very easily accessible by train.

The city was built on the shores of the Inn River and the bridge that stretches over the Inn was built in the 12th century — therefore it was called “Innsbruck” which means, bridge over the Inn.

When you leave the train station you are in the middle of the mountains and it’s beautiful in the winter.
